Adoption With ISSJ

We believe that children should grow up in a warm and loving home, and we support adoptions so that children are able to grow within a family. Our social workers, who are experts in child welfare and social work, provide support, with the welfare of the child as our first priority.
About ISSJ Adoption Policy

Special Adoption

Under the special adoption system, the legal parent-child relationship between the adopted child and their birth parents is severed, and a parent-child relationship is established between the adopted child and their adoptive parents. This system is designed to promote the welfare of the child, with adoptions established following a decision by the family court.

Q&A

I’m worried I won’t be able to raise my child after I have them.

Please tell us about your concerns first. Together, we can figure out how best you can raise your child.

Does the consultation cost money?

All consultations are free of charge. In addition to interviews on the phone or in our office, we can also visit you to hear your concerns in person.

I’m currently pregnant. Can I have you choose the adoptive parents before the baby is born?

ISSJ does not choose adoptive parents before the birth of a child. We provide adoption support following the birth of the child, after further discussions with the birth mother and/or her family about her/their thoughts and feelings.

Can I have my child adopted internationally by adoptive parents who live outside of the country?

In accordance with current laws, and in order to respect the welfare and rights of the child, and minimize potential burden, priority is given to adoptive parents living in Japan (domestic entrustment).

I am a foreigner living in Japan and have become unexpectedly pregnant. Could I put my baby up for adoption?

We provide consultations on pregnancy and childcare for those of foreign nationality as well. We can also help you think about various procedures, such as for status of residence, how to register the birth of the child in your country of origin (birth notification), etc.
Consultations are available in the following languages.
Japanese (日本語), English, Tagalog, Thai (ภาษาไทย)
