ISSJ’s adoption includes “domestic placement” in which the prospective adoptive parents live in Japan, and “inter-country placement” in which the prospective adoptive parents live outside of Japan.
All of the children ISSJ makes matchings reside in Japan. Adoption placement is an experience of loss for the children who have to leave the place where they are used to. ISSJ thus prioritizes domestic placement in order to minimize the physical and psychological stress for the children. When ISSJ cannot find suitable prospective adoptive parents in Japan, we will consider inter-country placement.
