Phtea Nhor Nhim Day Care Center (Cambodia)

Since 1996, with a grant from the Postal Savings for International Voluntary Aid in Japan of Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, ISSJ has established and managed a day care center, "Phtea Nhor Nhim - Smiling House" (picture on the right) in Cambodia and been training the local child care workers in conducting their work at the center. Phtea Nhor Nhim is located in Chamroeunphal village, just outside of Phnom Penh city.

Although Chamroeunphal village is only about 10 Km away from the central Phnom Penh, a majority of the people in the village have an underprivileged life. Many of the men are workers for digging wells or Motorcycle taxi drivers and the women normally have such side-jobs as making bamboo skewers besides doing household work. Also, there are children who go to Smoky Mountain (a dumping ground) to collect plastic and metal pieces in order to earn additional income for their families. Generally, public sanitation is a very serious issue in the area as there are no toilets in houses and daily water is normally used from well water or rain water.

At Phtea Nhor Nhim, four local Cambodian staff are learning about child care through actual practice under the direction of ISSJ social workers. We are conducting education programs on such matters as literacy, mathematics, drawings, music, sanitation, and nutrition. The children who come to the center are between 2 and 12 or 13 years old and some of them bring their younger siblings to take care of. Also, the local staff make home visits in the area and educate the people on sanitation and nutrition by using hand-made posters. Our goal is to train those local staff to become leaders and to develop programs that will function as regional community centers for the area targeted in the future.
