Promoting Social Integration for International Children and Indo-Chinese Refugees
(Sponsored by Japan Bicycle Foundation)
Kure Sports FestivalTogether with an inauguration of ISSJ in 1959, to aid international children still residing in the regions of Kure, Hiroshima, the Kure office was opened to provide relief care. As it was a naval port and was occupied by American and Australian navies after World War II, a number of international children were left with their Japanese mothers in Kure. Funded by the Australian and the U.S. government and different organizations that were concerned about the issue, ISSJ provided individual care including financial support as well as group-work care. Since 1996, when the ISS Kure International Communication Association was formed with the inclusion of Indo-Chinese refugees who have become permanent resident of Japan, ISSJ sponsor bazaars, sports festivals, community tours, and social get-togethers. These activities aid in the promotion of international exchange of people of different nationalities living in Kure.
