ISSJ 50th Aniversary Celebration

International Social Service Japan (ISSJ)
cerebrated its 50th anniversary this year since it started its activity in 1952. In commemoration of this event, the 50th anniversary ceremony, lecture and get-together meeting were held on September 26 at Hotel Grandhill Ichigaya in Tokyo.


Congratulatory speeches were given by Mr. Chikara Sakaguchi, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, Ms. Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs (the address was read for her by Mr. Morimoto, Councilor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Mr. Diego Rosero, UNHCR Tokyo Senior Legal Officer (the address was read for him by Mr. Koki Odano) and Dr. R. Frank, President of ISS Headquarters. Professor Etsuko Kita, the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing gave a lecture “Peace and Health-Destruction of Society by Dispute” using slides. Ms. Chizuko Ikeda, a harpist actively performing worldwide played harp music. Ms. Ikeda played the harp in New York for consoling the souls of those who died in the September 11th Terrorist Attacks. Her performance at the ceremony received great applauses from the audiences.


After the ceremony the get-together meeting was held among members who support ISSJ, volunteers, embassies concerned, other private and public authorities concerned, former executives and regular members of the staff. Mr. Kazuyuki Shikata, a Director of Japan Keirin Association, which has been subsidizing ISSJ for a long time, proposed a toast at the meeting. The participants had a lot of fun drawing lotteries, talking happy memories and future activities of ISSJ.
